Importing PDF files into LX for Java

Post by Nigel Draper »

I'm very unhappy. I have donated twice to help out with development of this software and can't use it effectively.
My coworker is using Beams and can import PDF's and use the extended functions.
I'm extremely frustrated and can't get my layout files imported. I really want to use this software as I've seen how good it is but the support for this version of the program doesn't seem to be there.
Thanks and awaiting a response.

Can you please explain exactly what is not working for you?

Specifically, what are you trying to do?

What do you expect to happen?

What does/does not actually happen?

It is important to know which version of LXFree for Java you are using as well as what operating system and version of Java it is running under.

If there is a problem with a specific pdf, you can e-mail it and we can take a look.

PDF support in LXFree for Java is not provided by Java or the operating system (as it is on a Mac). LXFree for Java uses open source libraries for its PDF support. So, issues may or may not be under our control. However, we are happy to try to troubleshoot with you and figure it out.

PDF import into LX Free

Post by Nigel Draper »

Thanks,
Here we go.
I'm using Version 1.93 (11513)
I'm trying to import a PDF graphic from our
Art department into LX Free to use as a background.
I've even tried it with .dxf files.
I'm hoping to use it as a base layer
for my fixtures but nothing appears on the layout.
I'm not trying to edit the PDF, just plug it in as
a graphic.
I'm running windows 10 and Java version 8 Update 181 Build 1.8.0
I cannot send you the PDF files due to confidentiality agreements.
CBS would use me as a pin cushion.
Thanks and let me know if I can give you
any more information. The program works
great under Mac and I can take files created by my
co-worker and manipulate them but I cannot create
a new one with a background.

Fair Winds,

To be clear, you can import a PDF file, just not a particular one?

If you drag the PDF to the LXFree for Java main window drawing area, or use the Format->Insert->Graphic from File, what happens? Nothing?

If nothing happens when you try to import the PDF, open the Help window. In the lower left there is a link to the console log. Its likely that something has thrown an exception during the import process. The trace of that will be found in the log. Please either e-mail or post that information. This may or may not provide a clue about what is going on. But, without being able to reproduce the problem, it may be the only hope of figuring it out.

Great. I'll give that a try.
Thanks,

P.S. I'm going to try importing .dxw file from an open source autocad program as well.
Let you know how that goes.

Just for clarification, LXBeams and LXFree only support importing DXF files, not DXW or DWG.
